Quick Farm and Life Update: Busy Fall for All
Hello friends! I feel the need to apologize for my absence of not writing anything for a while. I know there aren’t any rules to having a blog…but if there were it would probably be that you have to write something every now and then. However, during this time I have been busy working, farming, and starting a new endeavor.
New Job
As you already know, I completed my degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agronomy from Kansas State University in May. Over the summer, I worked at the MKC Castleton grain elevator during wheat harvest. A full-time job opened up at another location just down the road. I applied right away, had a few conversations over the next couple weeks, and just like that I got the job! I accepted the job as the Agronomy Plant Operator at Haven MKC. After about two months and the retirement of a coworker, I accepted a promotion and now I am the Agronomy Plant Manager. So as you can imagine, I have been a bit busy during the day.
Farm Update
Ok next up…farm life. We just finished up corn harvest! We didn’t have very much planted but it was a good experience for all of us. I say this because we primarily grow wheat and feed for livestock on our farm. Getting to work with corn is not “normal” on our farm so we all learned something new. Dad finished drilling wheat this past week and some of the earliest fields have already started to come up.
We have moved the majority of the cows to a new field for the winter. This will allow the pasture to rest and recover. Meanwhile, the manure and urine will add nutrients to the new field which will recycle back into the farm. Last weekend, we weaned all the calves from the cows. We fenceline wean calves which allows the cows and calves to see and hear each other. This decreases the stress that would occur if the calves were taken to another location during the weaning process.
Newest Endeavor
Lastly…my latest venture that has taken a fair bit of time is that I’ve started working out through Team Beachbody. It has been exciting two months having lost 13 pounds and a few inches and gaining back a lot of energy. I know this is a farm blog but y’all deserve to know that I did not abandon you for silly things. AND I am going to try and make a better effort to write more.
