Our Family Farm
We were raised in South Central Kansas on our family’s farm. We are the sixth generation and plan to carry on the tradition. Being farm kids has been one of the biggest blessings in our lives.
On our operation we have cattle and crops (and a few chickens for egg production for the household). We have a cow-calf operation, meaning we breed and raise heifers and cows to increase our herd and then sell bull/steer calves once they are weaned. Our cropping system consists of mainly wheat, as we also have a certified seed wheat business (we’ll touch more on this subject in the future). In addition to wheat, we grow corn, soybeans, oats, milo/sorghum, millet, sudangrass, crabgrass, and a few other feed and cover crops when desired. Since there are two of us and two big parts to our operation, we have specialized our interests and our college degrees to fit the farm.
Meet the Authors
My name is Sarah Zerger and I’m an Agronomist! I graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelors in Agronomy, option in consulting and production, in 2018 and have been working in the Agri-industry since then. I am passionate about crops of all kinds. Being an agronomy major has opened numerous doors for me, in and out of college. While in school, I was on the Crops Team, Weeds Team, Soils Judging Team, and the Forage Bowl teams. Being on the competition teams was a great way for me to learn more about the ag and agronomy industry and improve my skills as an agronomist.
My name is Kristina Zerger and I am an Animal Scientist! I graduated from Kansas State University in May 2020 with a degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agronomy. I love all things relating to cattle! In college, I was a member of the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club and the Agronomy Club. I competed on the Forage Bowl for two years and this past year in 2020, we were awarded the 2nd place team. I have been passionate about teaching people about agriculture but it becomes more challenging every day with all of the negative news and false social media posts. My goal for this blog is to educate as many people as I can about the industry that feeds and clothes us.
